Take Action Now: Urge your Legislators to Stop the Annual NJ Transit Fare Increases!

Are YOU ready to pay 3% more?

For years, New Jersey Transit has operated in a budget deficit because public transportation in the state has not been properly funded.

Diverting money away from initiatives like better service, updated routes, electric buses, and modern stations hurts riders every single day.

Last year, the NJ Transit Board approved a 15% fare hike and locked in a permanent 3% increase every year!

But where are the improvements riders are waiting for?

In this economy!?

With costs skyrocketing—housing, groceries, childcare—New Jerseyans are being asked to pay more and more, yet they still deal with delays, breakdowns, and unreliable service.
Instead of investing in real improvements, NJ Transit is using fare revenues just to stay afloat. In 2022, working-class families spent nearly 30% of their income on transit, and it’s only gotten worse.
Public transportation has become unaffordable for the very people who rely on it most. NJ Transit’s budget should not be balanced on the backs of riders. S3408 was introduced by Senator Cryan, the bill would prohibit NJ Transit from implementing automatic fare increases. Transit is a public good, and we need elected leaders and agency officials to treat it that way.

If you are concerned about the fare hike, now’s the time to speak up:
1. Send a letter to your NJ state representatives expressing your concerns above.
2. Give public comment at the next NJ Transit Board of Directors meeting on Thursday, July 17th at 6PM. You’d have the chance to influence board members by sharing your experience, opinions, or providing feedback and comments.
